Balboa Park Hidden Gems

Balboa Park is so iconic we often forget how unique and magical the park is! When you think of a picnic you think of hosting in a park. San Diego’s very own Balboa Park is the premiere place to picnic. Pop Up Picnic Co.’s owner and founder Lauren shares her best Balboa Park picnic spots and tips!

  1. Where to picnic in Balboa Park: The East Lawn across from the Botanical Building is in the heart of Balboa Park- it has great shaded lawns, easy walking distance to the main promenade and koi pond and there are often musicians playing nearby which makes for an awesome afternoon of free entertainment! BONUS: it’s one of a handful of locations where you can legally sip an alcoholic beverage! Just remember, no glass!

2. My pick for ‘unsung hero’ and  best spot to meet a friend in Balboa Park is the Spanish Village Art Center! It’s a colorful collection of artists’ studios: everything from photographers to painters, weavers and glass blowing! Many artists host live demonstrations and there are frequent open houses and events- it’s a great place to shop for one of a kind gifts and support local artisans! BONUS: Daniel’s Coffee at the back of the courtyard is not to be missed! They have a great selection of drinks and treats and they’re always whipping up something new- I’m currently obsessed with their whipped coffee (pun definitely intended.) This is my favorite spot to sip and sit or if I’m feeling adventurous I head to my next fave spot...

3. Best self-guided walk in Balboa Park: The Desert Garden, just east of The Spanish Art Center (and across Park Blvd from the big fountain) is a true hidden gem of Balboa Park. It’s a quiet space filled with mature cacti and succulents and plenty of walking paths to guide you through the unique landscape. It’s a great place to get lost and find your inner zen!

I hope you have fun exploring Balboa Park! If you have a favorite Balboa Park hidden gem that you’d like to share, tell us about it on Instagram! @popuppicnic.co

We’d love to hear your tips and tricks!
And remember: it’s up to us to be good stewards for our parks so follow the rules, pack out all your trash and be courteous to your neighbors- we think it’s more fun that way!

Peace, love + picnics!
