Walking Tour of La Jolla

La Jolla is known as the “jewel of the sea” and is one of our most popular picnic destinations. You could spend an entire day (or more!) exploring all there is to see. From coastal trails to sea lions and the best margarita patio in San Diego, Lauren, owner and founder of Pop Up Picnic Co. highlights her favorite La Jolla picks!

La Jolla Cove Picnic + Adventure: My favorite pairing for a fun day is a Pop Up Picnic + a walk around ‘The Cove’ and the Children’s Pool. The parklets + tiny beaches from Ellen Browning Scripps Park to Cuvier Park are FULL of fun exploring: secret stairs to private beaches, tide pools bursting with anemone + sea creatures and of course, THE SEA LIONS! I’m always amazed that we have so much nature at our literal finger tips! (Don’t touch the sea lions- they need space!) But I mean, WOW, it’s just awesome to be so close to these beautiful beasts.

Coast Walk Trail: Everyone loves a secret and this trail ticks all my hidden gem boxes: it’s an unassuming path that starts at Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave, more about that later! The path is about a mile long, and winds around the cliff’s edge so you have constant ocean views and there’s even a trestle bridge to cross! It’s short but sweet!  BONUS adventure: Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave features self-guided tours down a secret tunnel with about a million stairs (145!) to a sea cave that used to house pirate’s treasure… (well actually, bootlegged booze and opium) either way, it’s a fun side trip!

After a day of exploring La Jolla’s natural beauty, I like to stop for a margarita at Jose’s Courtroom! Their margaritas are delicious, chips + salsa are on point, and the patio has ocean views and overlooks Ellen Browning Scripps Park- what more could you ask for?  On Prospect Street at Girard Ave, it’s a quick walk to both of the self-guided adventures I mentioned above or any other shopping, yoga, art galleries or events happening in The Village!
